We whipped this pickup truck around the highways and sands of the dusty southwest. Check out what we liked and what we didn’t.
Is the Tundra the best pickup truck for you? MF takes it for a test drive.

That’s the first thing you’re going to notice about this vehicle—it dwarfs any other pickup we’ve had the opportunity to drive. It comfortably seats four in the cabin with enough room in the cab for a weekend of rock climbing, jet skiing, and ATV-ing (which, coincidentally, is exactly what we did with it). It’ll easily tow between 9,000 and 10,400 pounds, depending on your cab size, and, unlike most pickups we’ve tested, the Tundra feels more like a sports car off the line. You can probably attribute it to the 5.7 liter, 381-horsepower, V-8 engine. But just as size is a strength, it could be a weakness—if you live in a city, this thing is going to be almost impossible to park.

Verdict: Thumbs Up

Taking it off the road and into deep sand was surprisingly easy thanks to the Limited Slip Differential technology, which helps to provide better acceleration in deep sand or mud. The wheels fishtailed a bit, and it wasn’t as tight as driving on pavement (obviously), but there was never any concern that we’d get stuck in the the deserts of Nevada. The Tundra also has integrated traction control, which assists the driver when you’re going up a steep incline and again as you’re headed back down—a fantastic feature when you’re trying spot the best ATV trails from the top of a dirt road.

Verdict: Thumbs Up

Inside, the Tundra features an easy-to-use control panel and killer sound system, which you can easily hook up to your phone or other multimedia device via Bluetooth or cable. It also comes loaded with heated and ventilated front bucket seats, a DVD navigation system, and wood-grain on the trim—key for comfort and peace of mind when you’re on a long road trip.

Verdict: Thumbs Up

The one caveat the fuel economy is a big concern. If you’re looking to do some heavy towing, it’s justifiable, but if this car is just for getting from A to B—make sure you find the shortest route possible. All that power comes with a price of around 14 MPG in the city and 18 on the highway.

Verdict: Thumbs Down

If you’re an active guy who likes to take his toys out on the road, the Toyota Tundra is as good a choice as any for your next vehicle. It’ll pack you, your buddies, and all the stuff you’ll need for your weekend without feeling cramped, and there are very few places this pickup won’t be able to take you.

Verdict: Thumbs Up
