NASCAR's 10 Most Controversial Drivers

$

Whipping around a track at an impressive speed is nothing for these guys. But their top-dog reputations pretty much end there—presenting the naughtiest drivers in NASCAR history.
Presenting our list of the world's most disputed race car drivers—famous for winning, infamous for getting into trouble.
NASCAR racing race track and race car drivers
NASCAR fans are a baffling group. They say they don’t want whitewashed, goodie-goodie, cookie cutter drivers. But the second a driver shows personality or flair—whether it’s by driving too aggressively or shooting his mouth off—he gets ripped a new one for it. Consider the main personality traits that have ruled the racetrack: fearless, confident (sometimes bordering on arrogance), and mentally driven to get the W. So it should be no surprise that many of the best racers in the world can’t stop getting in trouble. Here are the 10 most controversial drivers in NASCAR history.

Fittest Man in NASCAR >>>

Race Car Driver Lee Petty
The head of the most famous family in NASCAR history was one of the first to approach racing as a way to make a living. He lived on what he earned on the track, and that made him an aggressive driver, so much that it frustrated the men who ran NASCAR. In 1957, NASCAR, fed up with Lee’s rough driving, sent him a letter, a copy of which is on display at the NASCAR Hall of Fame: “We have received a great many complaints this season about rough driving on your part, and they are now piling in so fast and from so many different directions that it is going to be necessary for someone to put the ‘eye’ on you for the next several race meets.”
Race car driver Junior Johnson
He spent a year in jail for having an illegal still. He was a win-at-all-costs kind of driver. And as an owner, he was either a master innovator or a first-rate cheat, depending on whether you liked his drivers or not. The truth is he was sometimes both at the same time. He scoured the NASCAR rule book for gray areas to exploit. He was among the first men to own more than one race team, and he delighted in pitting those teams against each other, because that made them both better.
race car driver Jeremy Mayfield
Mayfield had a history of squabbling with teammates and blowing up bridges behind him as he left race teams. Both are common in NASCAR and other sports, too. But Mayfield’s life and career spiraled downward on May 9, 2009, when he was suspended indefinitely by NASCAR after he failed a drug test, which ESPN reported was methamphetamine. He failed another test in July. He insisted both tests were false positives. In 2011, he was charged with possession of methamphetamine and possession of stolen goods.
race car driver Darrell Waltrip
Waltrip’s rise to the top of NASCAR is the prototypical story: Talented nobody from nowhere claws his way to the top, feuding with every big name in the sport along the way. He earned the nickname 'Jaws' because he never stopped talking, usually about how good he was compared to everybody else. Now a broadcaster, he has toned it down … but only slightly. He had rivalries with Bobby Allison, Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt and Cale Yarborough. All of them, plus Waltrip, are now in NASCAR’s Hall of Fame.
race car driver Curtis Turner
You can tell a lot about a driver by the titles of his biographies. One book about Turner is “NASCAR’s First Bad Boy.” The headline on an Internet bio of him is “Wood, Whiskey, Women and Winning: Curtis Turner.” He lived as hard as he drove, and he drove so hard his nickname was “Pops,” because he popped people from behind to get them out of the way. In 1961 he was banned from NASCAR for life for trying to form a union, though that was lifted four years later and he returned to the track.
race car driver Tony Stewart
There are two Tony Stewarts. Good Tony lives away from the track. He is calm, funny and generous. Terrible Tony has just stepped from a hot race car and has a short fuse and scathing wit. Terrible Tony snaps at reporters and storms at drivers who make him mad, throwing punches and insults. Some in the sport thought that becoming a team owner, which he did before the 2009 season, would mellow him out. But that didn’t happen, as his attempt to fight Joey Logano after a race at California early this season proved.
race car driver Kyle Busch
He is every NASCAR fan's dream driver—a cocky, mouthy, sublimely talented do-anything-to-win hellraiser—and they can’t stand him for it. Busch has gotten in trouble off the track (a speeding ticket at a whopping 128 mph in a 45-mph zone) and on the track (far too numerous to mention, often involving him wrecking another driver on purpose.) He donates time and money to children’s hospitals, but that stuff is rarely publicized, which is fine with him. More than any modern driver, Busch wears the black hat with pride.
race car driver Kurt Busch
So disliked is Kurt Busch that when Jimmy Spencer punched him in the face after a race at Michigan, NASCAR fans reacted as if it was Busch’s fault for putting his nose right in front of Spencer’s hand. Last year, Busch was on probation, so a reporter asked if that meant he didn’t drive as aggressively as he’d like to avoid getting in more trouble. Busch’s answer: “It refrains me from not beating the s$%t out of you.” Busch is a nice guy away from the track, and if he could simply calm down at the track, his life would get a lot easier. So far, he hasn’t been able to do that.
race car driver Tim Richmond
Richmond came from the open-wheel ranks, which made him a subject of derision in the NASCAR world just on principle. It didn’t help that he knew nothing about how cars work, which infuriates those with grease under their fingernails. He was a flamboyant and entertaining driver who some considered to have as much pure talent as anyone in history. The inspiration for Tom Cruise’s character in Days of Thunder Richmond loved to party, seemingly always with a woman under each arm. Sadly, illness forced him out of the car in 1987 and he never returned. Two years later, in 1989 he died of AIDS at only 34 years old.
race car driver Dale Earnhardt
Earnhardt's death elevated him into a beloved icon—but before that he was notorious for aggressive driving, earning two ominous nicknames: The Man in Black and The Intimidator. He came by those the honest way: by knocking people out of the way and not caring who got mad about it. Always more famous than popular, he was involved in some of the most high-profile feuds in the sport’s history. His death was controversial, too, prompting lawsuits about safety equipment, the release of photos by the medical examiner and his life insurance policy. Even today, 12 years after his death, there is debate about whether his No. 3 should ever be used again at the Sprint Cup level.

man using iPad

Whether you’re buying a tablet to more comfortably surf the web from your sofa, make a morning commute less monotonous or lighten your load as you zip to and from across-town meetings, the which-one-should-I-get decision is enough to make your head spin. We know exactly how you feel. That’s why we took it upon ourselves to test the most popular tablets on the market. Here are our top eight picks—and who we think these devices are best suited for.

Road Testing the Dell XPS 10 Tablet-Keyboard Combo

ASUS MeMo Pad Smart 10

If you’ve never owned a tablet before and you’re looking for a nicely priced device that you can use for reading, writing, and surfing the web, the ASUS MeMo Pad Smart ($299, amazon.com) is a great place to start. A 10.1-inch display and Android operating system make navigation easy, and though it’s a large tablet, the device weighs a mere 20.5 ounces. One more thing we love: the MeMo has a 170-degree viewing angle, so what’s on the screen is clear whether you’re sitting on the couch, lying down in bed, or sharing a hilarious YouTube video with a group of friends huddled around you.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0

If you’re always working on more than one project at once, go for the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 ($400, bestbuy.com). The device lets you open multiple windows in side-by-side view, so you can check your email and surf the web simultaneously. Plus, the tablet’s eight to nine-hour battery life is reflective of a machine that’s equipped to run multiple programs at the same time.

Got a work project to complete after hours? The Note comes with Polaris Office, which allows users to open and edit Excel, PowerPoint, and Word files. And we can’t forget to mention the S Pen, a stylus used to handwrite notes, personalize emails, draw or simply navigate the tablet.

Asus Google Nexus 7

Got a long commute via public transportation? The Google Nexus 7 by ASUS ($199 for 16G, bestbuy.com) lets you buy mobile data so you can surf the web even when you’re away from WiFi (like when you’re on the bus). Built with gaming in mind, the 7-inch tablet is compatible with the 700,000 games and apps—plus millions of eBooks, songs, movies, and TV shows—available for download on Google Play. Want to watch something you downloaded on your PC last night? No problem—Google Play stores your downloads on a cloud system so you can access them from your tablet without plugging in a USB cable.

Nook HD

We know how frustrating it can be to turn on your tablet only to discover that the settings were changed by the last user, like your girlfriend who likes to update the browser’s homepage to a fashion website when you’d prefer it to be MensFitness.com. But the Nook HD ($229 for 16GB, nook.com) eliminates that issue. Each user can set up a Nook profile, where he or she can create and personalize all the content in it. But let’s not forget the basics: The device stays true to its roots as a reading tablet that allows users to personalize font type, font size, and background color on a 7-inch HD display.

HTC Jetstream

If you’re purchasing a tablet for the sole purpose of watching movies and listening to music, the HTC Jetstream ($250; ATT.com) is your best bet. At 25 ounces, the tablet is heavier than expected, but its sound system can't be beat. The dual speakers and subwoofer pump out great audio, and even at maximum volume, they don’t deliver a scratchy or distorted sound. Plus, watching movies is always easier on a bigger screen. The 10.1-inch display has great viewing angles, so sharing the screen doesn’t mean your video-watching experience has to suffer. If you stumble upon any photo ops, don’t miss the camera’s multiple filter options.

Kindle Fire HD

Upgrade your reading experience with the Kindle Fire HD ($199, amazon.com). The 7.6-inch tablet’s Dolby Digital Plus audio platform is ideal for enabling the device’s “Immersion Reading” feature, which reads text aloud. In the middle of a book or movie and want to know more about a specific character? A simple tap on the screen enables X-Ray, an Amazon-only feature that lets you explore fictional characters, historical figures, photos, and biographies—all without leaving your current screen.

Microsoft Surface Pro

The Surface Pro ($899, microsoft.com), which runs on the new Windows 8 operating system, is an obvious choice for on-the-go professionals. Users are able to “pin” apps and webpages directly to their homepage, creating shortcuts to the programs they use most often. The device is compatible with Microsoft Office, so creating, editing, saving, and sharing documents while you travel is never an issue. The best part about the Surface Pro: It has both a touchscreen (great for web browsing) and an easy-to-attach keyboard (we’re sure you’ve seen the commercials, but they aren’t lying) that makes typing a heck of a lot easier.

iPad Mini

If you already own a Mac and an iPhone and you’re not up for figuring out a new platform, add an iPad Mini ($329, store.apple.com) to your Apple lineup. At 7.9 inches, the device is small enough to fit in your pocket, but its shrunken-down size doesn’t mean you’ll be sacrificing any features. The iPad Mini is compatible with more than 300,000 apps and a powerful A5 chip makes switching between them seamless—with no wait time. Rear and front-facing cameras let you take 5-megapixel photos and video chat with family or friends.

Versatile Actor Jeremy Piven on Building Character

You might remember him for his portrayal of angry agent, Ari Gold, but you'd be surprised by what else Jeremy Piven has in his arsenal.
If you thought Ari Gold was the only type of character in actor Jeremy Piven's arsenal, you're in for a surprise.
Jeremy Piven outside
He’s not going to yell at you. And he’s certainly not going to hurl a computer monitor across the room if he doesn’t get his way. In fact, if you think the 47-year-old actor is anything like the hotheaded agent he played on HBO’s Entourage, you’d be mistaken. Jeremy Piven builds characters, believable characters, and he’s doing it again on PBS’ Mr. Selfridge. Before you know it, he just might be Hollywood’s next great action-movie star.
Jeremy Piven
When I started on Entourage I was 40 movies into my career. Each time you kind of have to start again. I think the most important lesson—and this will sound so pretentious, and I don’t care—is to put your ego aside. It doesn’t matter where you think you are, where you should be, any of that. It doesn’t matter. No one cares. It’s just about doing the work.
Jeremy Piven at a sports game
If you look at the size of the Ari Gold character in the pilot episode, you wouldn’t believe it. The guy had just one scene. I was told that he was a fringe character, that he would have one, maybe two scenes per episode, and that’s it. It would have been very easy for me to go, “But wait a minute!” and take a stand. No, no, no. You can rise to the occasion with your work. That’s how you progress.

Jeremy Piven with Mark Wahlberg
I identify with his passion to put food on the table for his family. I don’t necessarily identify with his methods. I don’t think people respond to abrasive, reactive behavior. But, you know, that’s what people love! People, when they see me, they’re like, “Scream at me! Scream ‘Lloyd’ at me!”
Jeremy Piven
People are looking for what I believe are simpler times. They’re looking at where we came from, where people are actually confronting one another, and you couldn’t live in fear of confrontation like we do now in today’s society where you hide behind texts and e-mails and you don’t pick up your phone and all that. You couldn’t do that back then. And it leads to, in my opinion, the greatest drama.
Jeremy Piven
I would love to explore some action movies, because I’ve been training in boxing for so long, and now I’m incorporating a lot of Muay Thai, as well. You know, you’re equipped, and if you can spar and really dig in, that can translate.

The guy I train with is a cage fighter; he’s an MMA guy. We have a blast. If the pad slips and I knee him in the face or whatever, I’m like, “Oh sh-t!” and this guy’s like, “Are you kidding?” He’s in a cage for a living, so it’s like you can’t go wrong. I absolutely love it. No one knows that I spend almost every day doing this stuff.

"Before Ari Gold, I would play a lot of schlubby best friends and guys who could never rise to the occasion. They couldn't find it in themselves, and, because of that, they got run over."
Jeremy Piven with cast of Entourage
“To play an abrasive agent who is driven by money and rules by intimidation, when that isn’t where I come from, and then to be confused with that guy is both flattering and confusing.”

Jeremy Piven in Smokin' Aces
"You know you're doing your job when people are like, "Hey, do some blow with me!" And you're like, 'I don't do blow, thank you - that was a movie and that was vitamin C.'"
Mr. Selfridge
“Harry is a guy who made his way as an American in the U.K. I’m an American who has to get up every day in London and convince them, as Harry did. So there are probably more similarities between myself and Harry than any of these characters.”

Sleep Better Tonight

There’s no reason to wake up feeling wrecked. If you’re tossing and turning yourself into a daytime zombie, following these dos and don’ts will make your bedroom into a more restful space—and get you the sleep your body needs.
Check out the surprising things that could be making you toss and turn—and how to fix them.
Couple cuddles on hypoallergenic mattress

“Invest in a hypoallergenic mattress,” says Kristina Held, principal at Grün-Sustainable Architecture and assistant professor at the Art Institute of Charlotte. “They’re covered with material that lets air in, but won’t allow microscopic animal hair or dandruff to get through.” Another thing to keep in mind: If your girlfriend’s restless sleep keeps you up, make sure you buy a mattress that’s both big and stable, so that her movements don’t disrupt your side of the bed, says Philip Gehrman, Ph.D., assistant professor of psychology at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia and a specialist in sleep medicine.

Dog licks owner in bed
“Avoid sleeping with your pet,” says Held. “It’s dangerous, and the hair can make you sick and accumulate in your lungs. And be sure to wash your bedding every two weeks.”
Man checks smart phone at hotel
Having too many tech toys in the bedroom makes your mind associate the room with productivity, not relaxation. "You want your brain to know that when you're in bed, that's a place for sleep and sleep only," says Gehrman. If nothing else, put that bad boy on silent mode. Whatever e-mails you get can wait until dawn.
Tv in Bedroom
“When you go to your bedroom, you want to relax and be at peace,” says Held. “Watching TV could bring on a night of restless sleep.”
Striped wallpaper
“[If you use wallpaper], choose a pattern that incorporates horizontal lines, which tend to settle you and make you calmer,” says Held.
Red bedroom
“Don’t paint your room red, as it can make you uncomfortable and even aggressive,” says Held. “Stark contrast is also not good for a bedroom.”
Lights and lamps in bedroom
“It’s good to have one overall light so you can see, then some accent lights that are task oriented, like a reading lamp,” says Held.
Couple sleeps under covers
You think it's too hot, and your girlfriend’s always too cold. Since she'll probably sleep with an extra blanket no matter what the room temperature, lower the thermostat to just about your ideal temp, says Gehrman. "It's harder to cool off." Another option: Invest in a dual-weight comforter, which has heavier down in one side than the other.
Humidifier and Air Purifier
“Keep an air purifier or humidifier in your room,” says Held. “There are machines that do both, and sometimes they make white noise, which experts say is good because it covers sounds that could threaten your sleep.”
Messy bedroom
“Keep clutter out of the bedroom,” says Held. If you can organize your stuff, you’ll get some stress relief from it.”
Couple cuddles in bed sideways
You don't have to sacrifice sleep because your girl needs to cuddle. Lie in the classic spoon position to give her the contact she needs and you the sleep you crave. There might be even more benefits. "If you're sleeping on a good-quality mattress and pillow, the position has actually been shown to help lower stress levels while boosting intimacy," says Jodi Fidler, a chiropractor and sleep expert at Davis Chiropractic in Minneapolis.
Old-school alarm clock
Staring all night at the glowing digital display while you're trying to fall asleep can jack up your stress levels and keep you up. So trade your digital clock for an old-fashioned one with hands. That way, when the lights go out, you can't tell what time it is. Unless of course, you're crawling into bed at the crack of dawn. In which case, you're pretty much screwed anyway—at least when it comes to sleep.
