Check out the new 'Suicide Squad' trailer.
The ensemble cast of 'Suicide Squad,' starring Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, and Joel Kinnaman.

By all accounts, the average moviegoing public in America (and abroad) enjoyed Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Whatever the critics thought, people had no problem lining up and forking over their Friday night cash for a chance to see the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight knock the stuffing out of each other and generally brood about stuff.

But if all the Bats-Supes hoopla felt a little too, well, earnest for you, then oh man, are you gonna enjoy Suicide Squad.

"We're the bad guys, remember?" says Deadshot, DC's criminally accurate marksman, in the new "Blitz" trailer. Coming from Will Smith, the line isn't just a plot summation—violent, psychopathic DC villains attempt mission with dangerously low odds of success—but also permission to have a little fun. Lighten up. Mock the self-serious. Root for the Joker. (C'mon, you always wanted to.)

And yeah, Ben Affleck's Caped Crusader makes a few cameo appearances doing his usual save-the-day thing. But for now, all eyes are on the bad guys—especially, it seems, Margot Robbie's playfully deranged Harley Quinn. And Jared Leto's Joker.

Worst heroes ever? Fine. (DC's comics database lists their group weakness as "frequent inability to work together.") But they might be the most entertaining bunch in recent memory. After all, the bad guys always have more fun.

Suicide Squad, written and directed by David Ayer, hits theaters August 5.
