Climbing legend and iconic extreme sports figure Dean Potter passed away Saturday when attempting a BASE jump in Yosemite Valley. 

The 43-year-old, along with fellow action sportsman Graham Hunt, 29, jumped in an area known as Taft Point, which is located roughly 3,000 feet above Yosemite Valley, according to an LA Times report

Potter crossed thresholds and pushed boundaries in his sport countless times. He was best known for climbs up Yosemite National Park's Half Dome and El Capitan. In his early 20s, Potter became the first person to free climb three-quarters of the way up Half Dome, a feat he accomplished in four hours. Later on in his life, he became the first person to free climb Half Dome and El Capitan in less than 24 hours. Potter also scaled Delicate Arch, a prized landmark in Utah’s Arches National Park.
